MANILA, Philippines – Candice Adea, principal dancer of Ballet Philippines, took the silver prize in the senior women’s division in the 2010 International Ballet Competition held in Jackson, Mississippi from June 12 to 24.

Adea is the first Filipino dancer to make it to the finals of the event, one of the most prestigious dance competitions in the world.

She participated in the grueling two-week, three-round competition, doing classical and contemporary pieces with partner JM Cordero, also of Ballet Philippines.

This year’s competition was divided into men’s and women’s divisions for seniors (dancers aged 19 to 26) and juniors (dancers aged 15 to 18). The women’s senior gold medal was won by Cao Shuci of China, who also took the couple’s gold medal with partner Zhang Xi.

No gold medal was awarded for the men’s senior category; the men’s silver medal went to Kosuke Okumura of Japan.

The International Ballet Competition, which seeks to allow dancers to “test themselves against recognized international standards of dance excellence,” was first held in Varna, Bulgaria in 1964 and in Jackson, Mississippi in 1979. The Jackson competition was designated the official US ballet competition by virtue of a joint resolution of Congress in 1982.

This year, 119 dancers from all over the world competed in the first round, which required competitors to do a pre-selected classical piece. Adea and Cordero performed the technically demanding pas de deux from Marius Petipa’s “Don Quixote.” They will perform this again at tonight’s winners’ Gala.

From here, 50 dancers were chosen to go on to the next round, where they each performed a contemporary number. Adea and her partner Cordero showed off the challenging “Evacuation” choreographed by former Ballet Philippines artistic director Augustus Damian III.

The 34 dancers chosen as finalists were required to perform both classical and contemporary pieces in the final round. Adea did “Diana and Acteon” by Agripina Vaganova for the classical number, and “Sapin-sapin” choreographed by coach Victor Ursabia for the contemporary.

The 13-man international jury, headed by Bruce Marks, artistic director of the Orlando Ballet, noted Adea’s technical excellence as well as outstanding showmanship.

Adea was a ballet major at the Philippine High School for the Arts in Mount Makiling, and joined ballet competitions at an early age. She and sister Carissa are principal dancers of Ballet Philippines.

Interviewed backstage at the Thalia Maria Hall, official venue of the competition, after the winners were announced, Adea said she “treasured every moment” of the competition, but “I can’t wait to go home to share all that I’ve learned here.”

But before she gets on the plane there is one thing she is dying to do: “Go shopping!”

WORLD CHAMPION PHILIPPINE ALLSTARS ON BREAKING UP

February 2, 2009 18 comments

I can’t remember who emailed me this news. I’ve been having second thoughts whether to put it up. Anyway, I think this one’s pretty interesting. It’s not that the Philippine Allstars are breaking up entirely, some members left or something like that. Expect to see them back in 2009 with another amazing performance.

WORLD CHAMPION PHILIPPINE ALLSTARS ON BREAKING UP

January 22 2009

Manila, Philippines – The most surprising story for the year is finally out – the reigning world champions Philippine ALLSTARS are on the verge of breaking up. After a great run of winning international events and television stints, the giant killing Filipino group has now split up.

Internal issues have caused the break-up of the mighty crew. Pictures of some members have been removed from their official MySpace website. On their page, they list fourteen dancers without any reference to three members.

An inside source confirms that founding member and popular choreographer Reagan Cornelio and fellow members Jhong Mesina, Niko Bolante and Prince Paltu-Ob are now on the outer, with more members soon to follow suit It is a major blow to the hip hop dance scene in the country as many dancers look up to the charismatic dance crew.

“It’s definitely a shock, because despite all their success I guess conflicting personalities or different agendas may have come into play within the once close-knit dance group”, says the inside source.
Now, the hottest news is that a new supergroup is expected to be formed to rival the mighty ALLSTARS. Stay tuned.

America’s Best Dance Crew – Pinoy Version

September 14, 2008 2 comments

Yes! I almost forgot that we have something similar to MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and It was aired way back in ABS-CBN’s “You Can Dance”. The format is somewhat similar to what we see in ABDC and they too have judges who comments right after their performance. I have no Idea if they are going to have another season of You Can Dance or will we have something similar here in the Philippines. A number of crew’s fought in this competition and I must say, they all are very unique in their own rights. Props to everyone who joined and compete with their hearts out. Though they’re all amazing, only one can emerge on top and that is the group – Exquizyth. Exquizyth is a dance crew all the way from Mindanao (Gen.San?) and they’re so blessed with talents.

Check out the dude in Blue with the mustache in the first few seconds when the group is being introduced (0:01 to 0:12). I can’t stop laughing whenever I replay it. I love the 1:58 part in the video. I think it’s an intro or something of “Sweet Child of Mine” and man it really fits (or hell do I lack the imagination and creativity to hook it up into the mix). Enjoy!!
