The cream of the crop of Filipino dancers gathered last night at the Cross Road 77 Convenarium in Quezon City to determine the best of the best in the Philippine National Hip-Hop Dance Finals. It was the most unpredictable championship yet because of the remarkable, undeniable and spectacular talent and skills of many dance groups in the country all under one roof. MINDANAO stood tall as they took out the Top 2 positions, with new champion EXQUIZYTH and runner up NEXT BLOCK finishing 1 and 2. LUZON’s very own ATENEO (CADS) and CREW MECHANIX edged the rest of the field to finish 3rd and 4th respectively. Rankings will be published next week. One thing is for sure – the PHILIPPINES will become the future hub of hip-hop dance in Asia with the announcement of the newest hip-hop grand slam event to open doors in 2009. Stay tuned.
The competition was pretty intense that night as over 30+ crews from all over the country battle it out for a chance to represent the Philippines in the International World Supremacy Battlegrounds. There’s a number of commendable crews who also deserved much recognition – Pinoy Hip Hop, Groove Unlimited, New System to name a few. The Philippine Allstars also graced the competition and performed a little for the fans. BTW, I just gotta say this, someone gotta give the DJ a couple new tracks. He’s always been playing Low and Cyclone (WTF?!). Anyway, cyphers were also a highlight that night. IMO, Pinoy Hip Hop brought it down!

There seem to be a lack of videos online so here are the only teams that I manage to find:
Groove Luzon Qualification Finals was held in Teatro Marikina, Marikina city last September 20, 2008. The next qualification leg will be on the 27th of September in PASEO Open Market (Cebu City). The night was crazy as it featured 40 dance crews that showcased various styles of hip hop. If I’m not mistaken, 20 are chosen out of the 40 and most routines have bboys and krumps set-up. Here is the top 3 crews that managed to qualify in that leg. I still can’t find a video of Dance X’ performance.
Here’s GrooveTV’s take on that crazy event:
“The Manila Qualification event was rocking. The best crews in the Luzon region came down ready for war. The benchmark: the world champions Philippine Allstars. Dancers lined up early to prepare and meet their opponents. By the end of the night, everyone was hyped after witnessing some of the most exhilirating performances in history. PINOY HIPHOP, Dance X and Aligma finished one, two and three. The Top 20 will advance into the NATIONALS on October 11 against the best crews from Visayas and Mindanao.”
1st: Pinoy Hip Hop [I don't think this is their video in the competition, this is just for those who do not know them, I'll upload their routine when I get one. Keep on Checkin'! Thanks!]
The rest of the best in 2008 Groove Urban Dance Battle Mindanao! Sorry for the low-quality videos, I really can’t find anything better than that. And do comment down here! Surely, you can’t deny the quality of dance from our brothers in Mindanao!
Groove Mindanao Qualification Finals was held in Limkietkai Mall Atrium, Cagayan de Oro city last June 1, 2008. The next qualification leg will be on the 20th of September in Teatro Marikina. Here is the top 3 crews that managed to qualify in that leg.
1st: Hip Avenue
2nd: MX Version
3rd: Free Style Breakers
Pretty amazing competition I must say. Just look at how talented our brothers from the south are! Props to them!
