MANILA, Philippines – This time, University of the Philippines won’t go home with a big fat egg.

The UP Pep Squad lorded it over the Samsung UAAP Cheerdance Competition at the Araneta Coliseum yesterday, somehow soothing the bruised pride of the Fighting Maroons after their basketball team went 0-14 on the hardcourt the other day.

Before 20,950 spectators, the UP Pep Squad executed flawless routines that incorporated Filipino traditions, such as the Masskara and Panagbenga festivals, to reclaim the throne it last occupied in 2008.

“We’re able to improve on our shortcomings when we placed third last year, and today we’re able to give a performance that’s flawless and at the same time, maximized the skills of our cheerdancers,” said assistant coach NJ Antonio, whose wards started preparing for the competition back in summer.

It was the sixth overall crown in the annual event for the UP cheerdancers, who went home with the top prize of P340,000.

The Far Eastern University Cheering Squad, last year’s champion, settled for first runner up honors this time with its “Japanese samurai” concept capped by a big prop of FEU’s facade.

University of Santo Tomas’ Salinggawi Dance Troupe, which centered on the theme “Year of the Tiger” and utilized the white tiger character, placed third to make up for its failure to land in the podium in 2009.

“For me, it was a flawless routine for FEU from start to finish but I respect the decision of the judges,” said FEU mentor Jacqueline Alolor, whose squad got three second place rankings from the panel of judges. “But I’m planning to be the No. 1 again; I want to get the crown again for Morayta.”

Salinggawi, according to its coach Ryan Silva, learned from its experience last year and added more pyramids and lifts without sacrificing the dance and cheerleading aspects. The Thomasians got three third-place rankings and two second-place rankings from the judges.

Finishing fourth to eighth were Ateneo, La Salle, University of the East, National U and Adamson, in that order.

Superbowl of Cheerleading

March 9, 2010 1 comment

CCP Bobcats rule!

You get the Superbowl of cheerleading when the country’s best teams meet.
The coveted title of being crowned the best went to Central Colleges of the Philippines (CCP) Bobcats when they won for the fifth time the National Cheerleading Championship (NCC).
“The pressure to win NCC was really great especially since we’ve competed and come out as the grand champion in the 2009 World Cup Cheer and Dance in Brisbane, Australia,” says Bobcats team captain Lester Go.
Even without their international title, the Bobcats’ reputation is enough to strike fear in the hearts of other teams. They were NCC back-to-back champions in 2007-2008. They’ve been known to defeat UAAP cheerdance champions.
Most of all, they are known to deliver heart-stopping stunts and synchronized, clean routines.
And tumbling out of the top three last year only made them hungrier to regain their crown.
“We studied what was lacking from our team last year. We recruited and trained new dancers to replace the graduating members last year,” says Go.
The efforts paid off as they came out with the title. They outperformed the crowd’s favorite University of the Cordilleras (UC) Dance Squad.
UC got a standing ovation from the crowd when they made the difficult of transitions of their two and a half-level pyramids seem effortless.
“One of the best things about NCC is representing our school. People from Manila don’t even know what UC is and where it is. Now they show us respect,” says team captain Alfonso Fresnido Jr after UC finished second for the second straight year.
Despite an injury-plagued team, defending champion University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas Perpsquad salvaged third spot.
NCC follows international rules and regulations in the judging. Inquirer Libre and Inquirer 2bU! are its official print media partners.

UPHSD Altas win NCAA cheerleading title

UPHSD Altas win NCAA cheerleading title

MANILA – Learning from their mistakes last year, Perpetual Help came through with one of its best performance to date and cheered its way to the 2009 NCAA cheerleading competition title to retake the crown it lost a season ago before a loud Wednesday crowd at The Arena in San Juan City.

Matching their daredevil pyramids and stunts with beautiful music and a masterfully choreographed dance number, the Perps dominated the field by garnering a whopping 335.5 points to pocket the top purse worth a cool P90,000 courtesy of Samsung.

Last year’s champion Jose Rizal finished second place with a distant 311 points, the only other school that breached 300 points to pocket the first runner-up purse amounting to P55,000.

Guest team Emilio Aguinaldo College sent shockwaves down the competition venue as it snatched a surprise third place effort by edging powerhouse San Sebastian by just a hairline, 244-243.

The Generals took home the third place purse worth P45,000.

Angeles U Foundation, for its part, snared the Samsung Stunner award—a plum given to the most beautiful cheerleader—courtesy of Jojo Cabales.

It was a bittersweet triumph for Perpetual Help following its failure last year when it came into the competition as a heavy favorite only to stumble in the competition proper with several cue mistakes. It finished fifth place, its worst result in the league since the event’s inception six years ago.

“Last year we were doing our routine perfectly but when the actual performance came, we committed many mistakes,” said Perpetual Help coach Ruf Vandolph Rosario, who was hired four years ago and steered the Las Piñas-based school to a three-peat from 2005-2008.

“This year, our performance in the actual competition was nothing but perfect. Maybe it’s really God’s will for us to win,” he added.

Rounding up the top 10 finishers were San Sebastian (243), 2004 titlist Mapua (236.5), AUF (214), St. Benilde (194.5), Arellano U (169), Letran (168.5) and San Beda (148).

This year marked the first time that the league teamed up with the National Cheerleading Championship (NCC), the only association in the country following international standards, to make this edition a resounding success.

It was the Perps’ third title this year after reigning supreme in the NCC Finals and beating UAAP schools State U and Far Eastern U in the Fil-Oil UAAP-NCAA showdown early this year.

The National Cheerleading Championship: Rockin’ 5 @ 5

October 14, 2009 1 comment

The National Cheerleading Championship (NCC) is the country’s first and only cheerleading competition which employs international rules and regulations.

This event is modeled after the American Cheerleading Competitions, the highest level of competition in the world of cheerleading.

The NCC’s aim is to bring together the best of the best in a National tournament. The primary purpose of the NCC is to raise the caliber of cheerleading in the country and legitimize the sport through an annual national tournament.

The secondary purpose is to assist educational institutions bolster their physical education programs mainly for, but certainly not limited to, women.

It is the NCC’s vision to, one day, be able to send a Philippine National Team to compete in the World Cheerleading Championships in the US.
