PHILIPPINES, SINGAPORE, NEW ZEALAND DOMINATE BG
Nov 30
Gravity-defying street dancers AMPLIFIED touched down in Australia with a clear mindset – represent their country proudly on Sunday November 29 at the World Supremacy BATTLEGROUNDS (WSB) Hip Hop Dance Championship. The passionate crew cannow go back home to the Philippines with a new title: World Supremacy Champions.
The young dancers arrived safely in Melbourne last Friday night after a lengthy trip out of Manila. A team spokesperson said the crew immediately felt the chilly conditions in Melbourne, but asserted that they are all used to it due to similar type of weather in their hometown of Baguio City.
They are meant to be one of five Philippine crews to represent their country, but for various reasons only Amplified managed to get their visa documents approved. It was a photo finish as they received their visas a day before they were meant to fly out of Manila. They were disappointed to discover that the rest of the RP crews could not make it, but they were adamant that they will get on with the job. As the current GROOVE Philippines silver medallists, Amplified carried the full weight of heavy expectations and they delivered with flying colours.
Amplified choreographers Don Fontanilla and Joseph Tadilfa mixed up their dance routine with a blend of krumping, popping, locking and funk styles.
You could feel the anticipation grow when the MCs announced the “next crew from Baguio City, Philippines” – the pro-Filipino crowd roared in unison to cheer for Amplified. From the getgo, the Amplified kept everyone on their feet, with a wave of mind-blowing move after move, followed by some innovative new tricks, and some creative mix of dance and music, it was going to take another special performance from another crew to beat this routine. The capacity crowd gave them a standing ovation.
Singapore’s two new entries, Suntec City’s first and second placed crews IF YOU’RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT CLAP YOUR HANDS and SEVEN CREW respectively, provided the best challenge against the ultra-entertaining Filipinos. Both crews mesmerized the crowd with fresh routines not seen in AUSTRALIA for a long time. Both crews were in synch, in time, talented and smooth. It was no wonder that both crews won the SILVER and BRONZE.
In the VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION, New Zealand absolutely annihilated its competition by creating history and placing 1, 2 and 3. In the PRIMARY division, it was Brisbane’s 1 2 CHECK that stood out, followed by two more New Zealand crews, K-OTIC, and KANI KREW taking silver and bronze.
