actually yeah… UP INDAYOG SHOULDVE BEEN THE WINNER THAT NIGHT, in terms of Hiphop/streetstyle. :)

some of the winners were deserving while others certainly raised eyebrows. Skechers is fast becoming a joke. They should bring back the roster of judges during the first two Skechers. Skechers is becoming a noontime show dance contest.

    October 19, 2009 at 10:45 am | #72

if you know how to judge what great dancing is then why not just put up your own dance contest instead. your reactions only reflect the kind of people the school you come from produces.

you may have everything, but how you are as a person will spoil it all.

at the end of the day, your criticisms can never change the results.

  34. Lex
    October 19, 2009 at 3:04 pm | #73

Why don’t you tell us kung saang school ka nangggaling and i’ll let you know if you deserve a spot sa finals.

skechers is becoming a joke dahil sa mga taong katulad niyo. we inside the dancing community should be supporting one another, not hating.

nakalog na ata sa kakatumbling niyo ang mga ulo niyo, try to dance with a real choreo for a change.

*cheng cheng! sound effects, sound effects! tugsh!*

    October 19, 2009 at 8:26 pm | #77

so yeah, i saw PLM’s video online. and do u wanna know why PLM got a spot in the finals? because of the SINCERITY of their dance, they’re purely having fun and enjoying every move, dancing is an art right, you dont dance to compete, u dance because u want to express, not to just merely impress. Maybe you’re (CHela ANne) just underestimating what a public university students can do.

guys, chillax. let’s not give subjective opinions. magpapatayan ba tayong lahat para ipangalandakan ang opinyon natin? i’m sure objective naman ang judges. kung sino man ang nasa list, they deserve it. pinagpaguran naman ng lahat ang performance nila.

you know better than this guys. aksaya sa oras ang pakikipagtalo. para kayong nagtatalo kung sino ang mas magaling sa ABS-CBN at GMA. now, i understand your school spirit pero di naman kailangang magpakapalingkera tayo, right? nasa college pa man din tayo. let’s observe proper decorum. kasi yung mga nakakabasa baka kung ano’ng isipin sa image ng school dahil lang sa mga comments.

    peace ^_^

The greatest asset and also the greatest fault of the UP Manila Indayog Dance Varsity is that they are always ahead in terms of choreography and style. They are always among those who introduce new styles and genres in competitions.

They were the first to use krumping in collegiate dance competitions in the Philippines (Rhythm Street 06). During the third Skechers they introduced tutting and house.

But their being ahead sometimes becomes a disadvantage like in Skechers. The judges don’t get the nuances of their techniques and choreography. But notice that the style Indayog used will be used by other groups the following year, only the other schools will be better since they don’t have the same academic requirements to meet.

In UP Manila’s case it is “THEY CAME. OTHERS SAW. OTHERS CONQUERED.” Other schools follow UP Manila’s lead and they get to do it better. Nakakasawa kaya ang sandamakmak na tutting at whacking this year na ginawa na ng Indayog dati pa.

Majority of Indayog’s style depends on SUBTLETY. Unfortunately, the judges employed lately by Skechers are inclined towards a noontime show style where premium is given to stunts and big theatrical movements. This would explain the rise of schools like TIP. TIP wasn’t able to enter the finals during the early years of Skechers. When the roster of judges was changed the results drastically changed.

Look carefully at the groups during the Oct 17 leg. UP Manila’s style was drastically different from the other groups. Too bad for them, they aren’t inclined towards circus acts which the judges lately have been looking for.

yeah budoy, agreed. it’s sad how these “baranggay-out-of-school” hip hop is corrupting the skechers scene. choreography pa rin dapat talaga. look how them fighting who’s better than the other, sure it’s a competition, pero should we act and speak like that? tayo tayo na nga lang sa industriyang ito, ganyan pa.

sa iba diyan like chela anne and baliw007, pakisabi na lang kung saang school nga ulit kayo galing? let’s see kung deserving. nakalog na ng kakatumbling niyo mga ulo niyo. *with matching sound effects*

as for UPM, hindi siguro excuse yung introduction, ang issue ay justification. i dunno about tutting, pero sa kanila ko unang nakita ang house, and theyre good at it.

in fairness sa TIPQC, umaayos naman na choreo nila, getting there na din.

we dont need to put someone else down to praise ourselves. sa atin na manggaling yun if we give it our best shot.

nakakalungkot kasi sabi nga nung isang comment kanina, a competition like skechers should bring us closer, denominator natin ang pagsasayaw, you guys are doing it all for the wrong reasons.

tanong ko lang kay budoy… do u hav any idea y did d SKECHERS changed the roster of judges? y ABDC has diff winners of diff styles? y ur brothers like UP Diliman now is far way diff from UP Diliman before, but still make it up on d top spot? and lastly, please explain these phrases…

“In UP Manila’s case it is “THEY CAME.

When the roster of judges was changed the results drastically changed.”

-does it mean that Indayog is a high flying school before?

Yo! Why cant everybody be happy with the results? There will always be a winner and a loser in a competition but it doesnt really matter coz atleast ya’ll showcased all your talents and routine. Its up to the judges to decide who’s gonna win. Ya’ll should stop hatin on each other and tryna support each other in dance community. That’ll be more cool if we keep up a healthy/friendly competition. Peace everybody!

Diliman has always been great since they can transcend things like style. They simply have everything: stunts, choreo, attitude. That would explain their dominance. Diliman will always be up there because of their power and versatility. They can simply do anything, and do it well. They are not a circus act unlike others.

Indayog has never been a stunt group and prefers to be technical. They choreograph according to the rules set by skechers. If you read the rules there are provisions concerning number of repetitions and solo acts. There are even rules governing the use of other genres like jazz or ballet which makes us wonder whether judges are really reading the rules since some groups employed other genres.

There was even a time during the early skechers when OPM wasn’t allowed but some groups used it and even emerged as one of the winners.

As for others who try to accuse me of bitterness, do try to read the comments carefully. You are taking my comments out of context. Better ask your schools to return your tuition fee since your reading comprehension skill is sorely lacking.

I didn’t say that TIP wasn’t deserving. I was explaining the shift in the judging paradigm hence the results.

It seems that it will be a very tight race for the championship this year.Unlike previous years when UPD won hands down, this year, CADS came in too close for comfort;some in the crowd even thought that CADS should have won. This is definitely a first since UPD has always ruled the stage with the others a far second.Another first is that UPD posted their video. So, it looks like they will be doing a lot of adjustments for the final battle to ensure the crown.

The Skechers team will really have to be transparent re judging. Barring mishaps, it looks like a very close call in the College division with the competing teams of UPD,CADS,DLSU,TIP and FEU.Of course after seeing all the performances, the other teams will also be beefing up their routines.

To ensure fairness in judging, how about:
a.Adding an international judge like the UAAP Cheerdance competion; or
b.Having 5 judges with the top and bottom scores being cancelled. This way, the judges will think twice about their scoring because they do not want to be the cancelled scores; or
c.having 4 judges with all the scores added up to get the average. The score that is farthest from the average is cancelled.

As I said, barring mishaps,it looks like a close call and Skechers really have to address the judging issues now because every year the teams will just keep getting better and better.

stop explaining na lang, budoy.. daming presinto jan.. haha! look, i understand that UPD brought a lot of styles in the competition and i respect that. who doesn’t? but the thing is, the title speaks for itself na rin, which is Skechers “STREET DANCE” Battle 5, and not Skechers “HOUSE DANCE” Battle 5! Of course in the streets you’ll see a lotta break dancing, krumping and stunts. sure, you do see some “House” style of dancing in the streets too but not as often. (although there are a lot of houses in the streets! my house belongs in a street too!) hahaha!

and VIBOI, “barangay-out-of-school”? haha! man, just because you can’t do what others can and your school didn’t get it to the finals, and just because they do tricks that you can’t, doesn’t mean these make them “barangay-out-of-school” and circus.. ‘coz if they are, that makes your school what?
    being beaten by “barangay-out-of-school”?
    you think about that, huh?

besides, with all due respect to UPD, other “barangay-out-of-school” did a lot of step for a short beat. view UPD’s again.. one step lasted for how many beats?

so budoy and viboi? btw, are you sure u guys are different persons? hahaha! mukha kasing c budoy and c viboi ay iisa! hahaha! peace out fellaz! smoochiez!

siztah27, i can’t help but react to what u are saying. I understand budoy and i don’t even feel that much bitterness.
you said “the title speaks for itself na rin, which is Skechers “STREET DANCE” Battle 5, and not Skechers “HOUSE DANCE” Battle 5!” See how much narrow minded you are. Street dancing is not limited to break krumping and stunts. There are more styles of streetdancing all around the world. If you see, its not all about stunts anymore, but more on the choreography. Nandun ang puso. budoy was being scholastic and all you can do is turn it into a shallow argument. im sorry but i just really had to react.

Oh SIZTAH27… you must’ve turned off majority of your higher brain functions when you made this brash and oh-so-laughable comment. Ergo, let me explain things to you.

First of all, the school that BUDOY mentioned when it comes to contributing styles is UP Manila not UP Diliman. Their team’s name is Indayog. (I’m guessing that’s simple enough so I’m sure you got that provided that your brain is working better by the time you’re reading this.)

Secondly, STREET DANCE is an umbrella term used to define dances that were not created in the studio. THEREFORE, House can be classified as a street dance style.

And finally, as bad as it sounds, I’m sure there is a better euphemism for “barangay-out-of-school.” I think that what VIBOI means are the group of people, not necessarily students who weren’t schooled, educated or at the very least INFORMED that STUNT WORK AND DANCING ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

So there. The next time, think before you type so as to not embarrass yourself accidentally. As you said “smoochiez!”

      (rolls eyes and laughs)

why talents guild? 1st of all we think they haven’t given their best shot YET bec they want to suprise people with their stunts in the finals. we all know TIP Talents Guild is the only crew that does TRICKS COMBINATIONS. Most of the crews can do tricks, that much is clear, but can they be creative enough to come up with the idea of combining them? well that’s what we thought.

and when it comes with routines we think Talents Guild is clean with the moves and the choreography also somehow stands out. but, we respect everyone’s comments, though. we have different opinions.

Basically, some campuses deserved to place. And there are some that just don’t…

The sad part is, you seem to mask your lack of comprehension by using cheap insults and childish banter. Now that is pathetic.

Oh and by the way, my school, UP Diliman, did get in. My former high school, Miriam, also got in. Should we lose this year, I’ll be alright with that because my school will continue to give me good education – something more important than an over-sized check.

Here we have a case of “out-of-school” (although that term is debatable) dancers beating legitimate students. Remember the STI disqualification during Skechers 2?

usually they use a not so famous school kasi among the big schools eh magkakakilala ang mga dancers.

So wala talagang puwang ang “out of school” dancers sa Skechers compet.

this link is very DISAPPOINTING.. the crews danced their HEARTS out just to create good routines.. all they want to do is to perform and represent their schools with their talents.. it is NOT easy i repeat NOT EASY to perform min this kinds of competition especially having BIG schools who have been in participating and winning since season one.. please STOP the bickering.. these dancers, finalists or not deserve some RESPECT from everyone.. if you can’t appreciate what they’ve done just SHUT YOUR DAMN DIRTY MOUTHS and MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESSES… peace out.. TEAM ONE TO DANCE AS ONE…

What I mentioned were facts.

Duh.

Is that all you can really say? It’s not like he’s attacking you or anything. He is merely stating what he has gathered. From where I stand, he is not doing this to showcase intelligence or to belittle other schools. Your response makes me feel as though you only want to hear or read your version of gospel truth and when faced with evidence that negates your beliefs, you go to the “oh-you’re-UP-therefore-you-think-you-are-better” drama.

Doesn’t that make you more “mayabang” than he is?

i agree with BUDOY. The judges should have been more educated and more objective in judgin. I know you can all agree with me but the real essence of streetdance is missing already. DINADAAN NA LANG SA BLOWUPS but the TECHNICALITIES? wala na. This is because the judges really have a very LIMITED knowledge on the what’s and how’s of real HIPHOP DANCE. Like FEU, it is said in the rules that *ANY JAZZ OR THEATRICAL ROUTINES WILL BE DISREGARDED IN JUDGING*. But what happened, wawtch the vid and be the judge. Like WORLD HIPHOP, not so famous judges are in the panel but they are really the famous ones from the underground that really knows the basics to the latests of HIPHOP. There are so many teams like BEDAN DANCE TROUPE and UPM INDAYOG that deserve the spot more than the ones who did. For e.g. do the judges know that Beda’s piece is one of the most latest and technical style when it comes to laidback/la style? or do they really know that UP Manila’s style, taking it from the roots of Hiphop is the one called as NY Style used by most underground performers in the Battle Cities like Ny, LA, NJ and Houston. It is also the style taught by Luther Brown ( a World Hipho Judge ). I think the judges should be re shuffled. I remember this one time when Meynard of Streetboys was asked to do Lockings. haha What he did? He just LITERALLY Locked is shoulders and arms in short PUMITIK PITIK LANG but in fact Locking (campbell locking) is really a different move which originated from UPM INDAYOG, DLSU and the BBOY CREWS before. KAWAWA YUNG MGA TECHNICAL DANCERS, NILALAMON YUNG COMPETITION NG COMMERCIAL Hiphop and FAMOUS DANCE ICONS WHO REALLY HAS NO IDEA OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

    November 3, 2009 at 3:36 pm | #163

We really need to do something about this, I am not a dancer and I am not part of the BIG SCHOOLS that usually compete but I am a scholar of London School for the Arts before major in Hiphop and contemporary street style and I know how messed up and how disrespected hiphop style is here in the Philippines.Sorry if im putting you as an example FEU but really, wala kayo karapatan. You just tried to get the audience’s attention by doing a contemporary piece. Before, you used to bite costumes from UPD, waacking from UPM, Jun Quemado’s choreo Locking from Lasalle and now, you are not doing the real thing? When can you improve your discipline and your originality? Ang lalakas niyo pa naman. Sayang.TIP is also great but sayang andami niyo binite. I have nothing to say more, sayang lang yung mga bite and I know you can still come up with the same routine or better just eliminate the copied routines and focus more on technicalities not on tumblings.I really hope makarating to sa brainbox and they should come up with a better way of lining-up judges that are really deserving to be called judges for a STREETDANCE BATTLE. Peace yall

“wala kayo karapatan magmalaki” that was a bit harsh.. all they did was perform and dance their hearts out.. why you guys are so affected like that? and to come up with these type of comments to these innocent people and most especially their schools is way too below the belt..

to that idiot codenamed “ihatehaterz” :

itong thread na ito, di kayo dapat nagsusulat ng kung anu-ano. Wala lang talaga laman ng utak ng mga tipo mo. Dance is a way of life, a culture.
Bottom line is some campuses deserve to win. Period.

I’ve watched this competition for several years na. Leaves much to be desired.

About that person’s URL,there is nothing libelous about it. The said individual is notorious for meddling in several campuses nga.

you know guys, ok lang naman po kung magcocomment kau about the dance, but i don’t think na dapat idamay ang name ng skul. I’m a PLMayer, and i really feel sad na maxadong maliit ang tingin niyo sa skul namin. to ms. beanie who said na ang plm ay bagsakan ng mga bagsakan sa UP, mam, im sorry pero that is not true. i passed the UPCAT but i chose to study at PLM. i know a lot of honor graduates who passed UPCAT but decided not to study there. isa pa, the word ISKO was not made for UP studenta only, so please wag niyong angkinin ang word. isa pa hindi naman lahat ng pumapasa sa UP eh magaling. alam niyo yan guys, ang daming shifters dyan. i know that kasi marami akong kakilala dyan at sila mismo ang nagsusuply sakin ng info. hindi ko alam kung bakit sa tuwing nakikilala ang PLM eh madami nagrereact, natatakot ba kayo na baka dumating ang tym na matalo kayo ng school namin. my god, guys, this is just a dance contest, let’s just respect the judges decision. we don’t need to argue like idiots here.

    • kimown
      November 22, 2009 at 5:33 pm | #178

well kung pumasa ka sa upcat but you opted to study sa plm, that’s your decision, it doesnt make UP less of a premiere university dahil lang hindi “ka” dun nag-aral, sino ka nga lang ba?

bakit maraming nagttransfer sa UP? kasi nga premiere. premyado. why settle for anything less? and besides, kahit pa transferee ka lang eh you need certain requirements para pumasa. requirements that not everyone can meet.

is plm one of the top schools sa pinas? idts.

      • kimown
        November 22, 2009 at 5:36 pm | #179

and besides, i have classmates back in high school na nasa plm ngayon, let’s just say their bulbs are quite dim.

  107. kate
    February 23, 2010 at 12:04 am | #180

taga UP ako. but i agree with leogurl. (hindi dun sa sinabi niya na hindi lahat ng UP magaling.) hindi lang naman UP ang may karapatang umangkin ng term na ISKO. isko stands for iskolar ng bayan. scholar of this country. government subsidized ang tuition. may sense naman diba? i can assure you, hindi lang UP ang school na government subsidized ang tuition.

UP is undoubtedly a premier school. but do we have to deny others the right to proclaim their talents? just because they can be better at something? kailangan ba mang-away? nakakasira sa pangalan ng UP. sasabihin ng ibang tao, “yan bang natututunan sa UP?” I’m already starting to believe that that may be true.

all this is useless banter. I can only agree with those who say “let’s just accept the judges’ decision,” and “competitions are supposed to create a friendly bond between dance teams, not hostile rivalries.” competitions are the not only the place to share and be proud of our talents, but it is also a venue to appreciate those of others.

and please, don’t destroy reputations of specific people. you’re accusations are most likely based only on circumstantial observations. chismis lang ang basehan niyan. you don’t know their story until you hear it first hand.
