REPLY to THOUGHTS ON THE WHHDC2009

August 22, 2009 2 comments

This is like weeks old but after going back and checking my old posts, I believe Iwa Clendon’s reply to Chelo’s Thoughts on the 2009 World Hip-hop Dance Championships deserve’s a post of its own. It goes:

Kia Ora Chelo,

Phillipine ALL STARZ we are FANS (1st type), our SUPREMACY Varsity kids 2008 from NZ absolutely raved about the welcome, approachability & support they received from what according to “Dancers” World Wide is the greatest Hip Hop Dance Crew to compete ever. They were inspired and humbled to receive honest and genuine friendship and feedback, as they shared Loews Lake with ALL STARZ and hung out in their rooms.

I was not physically at WORLDS 08 but my gosh I felt my spirit fly there, I was on the end of the phone and I felt the excitement and anxiety in fact I guess it was worse for the “waiters” back home. I was also unable to make it to WORLDS this year and I am glad only in that I would have been so upset by the results I know I would have been unable to keep my mouth shut.

Yes the HHI results this year stunned many, this led to debates which included our own NZ Crews. It was thought this was the strongest contingency NZ has ever sent across the 3 divisions and we were so VERY HAPPY & THRILLED for our REQUEST girls but so bitterly disappointed for SWEET & SOUR, TMC and De, Ja, Vu our juniors. Not forgetting the SHOCK of what happened to ALL STARZ.

I didn’t mean to take away anything from the FRANCE & MEXICO BUT in NZ we have made a real effort to run JUDGING Workshops using HHI rules. We discuss, argue, debate, interpret and try very hard to reach a concensus through pulling apart rules and putting them back together again. What does this mean? What does that mean? What are street styles (evidence to back up arguments etc)? We try to have everyone on the same page and to level the “playing field” so that we give the COMPETITORS (the onez who do the hard yards), the fairest and best judging competition that is possible.

With the results this year at WORLDS we can only assume that the HipHop International JUDGES failed to do the same thing. We know that although JUDGING can be seen as “subjective” there is much that can be regulated. Possibly HHI need to review their own rules and where there is ambiguity or “shades of grey” there perhaps needs to be definite clarification. Please don’t get me wrong there has to be those who lose in any competition that is NOT the POINT for us it is about the WAY WORLDS IS JUDGED.

IF OUR CREWS ARE GOING TO BE JUDGED THEN DAMN IT LET IT BE BY THOSE WHO KNOW HOW TO JUDGE AND KNOW THE RULES AS GOOD AS THE COMPETITORS WHO SWEAT BLOOD & TEARS PUTTING TOGETHER THE SETS TO TAKE TO WORLDS.

After the massive let down of this years WORLDS, I wanted to say to the organisers to stick their competition where the sun doesn’t shine, because like you we literally have to claw our way to WORLDS every year. The financial STRESS this competition puts competitiors, families & organisors under is at times unbearable but we do it and WHY?? because WE LOVE HIP HOP DANCE, WE LOVE COMPETITION, WE LOVE SEEING ALL STARZ & KABA & OTHER TOP CREWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. The WORLDS compettion gives us a measure by which we try to validate our hours of hard work, our total focus to the exclusion of everything else, education, family, friends etc. Like you it becomes EVERYTHING THAT WE LIVE & BREATHE. Is that RIGHT? I’m not sure all I know that is the way it is when you LOVE SOMETHING WITH A PASSION the way dancers of Hip Hop LOVE their craft.

Like you we will keep going because that is what we do. What we are looking at is possibly getting into other International competitions as well and possibly redirecting our energies and focus elsewhere. The idea of starting an OCEANIA Hip Hop Dance competition is looking more and more appealing because at the end of the day us Kiwi’s are very much aware if you really don’t like the way something is done then don’t keep complaining do something about it.

WE DON’T HAVE ANY CONTROL OVER HHI & HOW THEY RUN THEIR COMPETITION AND ITS NOT SOMETHING WE WOULD WANT ANYWAY, BUT WE CAN CONTROL WHAT GAMES WE WILL PLAY AND ON WHOSE TERMS.

We really look forward to keeping track of the PHILIPPINE ALL STARZ journey wish you all of the best of GOD’s blessing and keep dancing.

Luv Iwa
